ABOUT ANITA SARKEESIAN

Anita Sarkeesian

Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning media critic and the creator and executive director of Feminist Frequency, an educational nonprofit that explores the representations of women in pop culture narratives. Best known as the creator and host of Feminist Frequency’s highly influential series Tropes vs. Women in Video Games, Anita lectures at universities, conferences, and game development studios around the world.

ABOUT EBONY ADAMS

Ebony Adams, PHD

Ebony Adams, PhD, is an author, activist, and former college educator whose work foregrounds the lives and work of black women in the diaspora. She lives in Los Angeles with a steadily increasing collection of Doctor Who memorabilia. She writes widely on film criticism, social justice, and pop culture.

ABOUT FEMINIST FREQUENCY

In 2009, Anita Sarkeesian began Feminist Frequency by making videos in her living room examining pop culture from a feminist perspective. Those early videos were short and simple and uploaded with the belief that media has the power to change the world.

Today, Feminist Frequency is a not-for-profit educational organization that analyzes modern media’s relationship to societal issues such as gender, race, and sexuality. These videos encourage viewers to critically engage with mass media. The site also provides resources for media makers to improve their works of fiction and recently with the addition of the new web series The FREQ Show, it connects popular culture to contemporary social and political issues.

Overall the feminist frequency strongly advocates for the just treatment of all people online and believes that media is an essential tool for eradicating injustice. Through consciousness-raising around issues like online harassment, the hope is to cultivate new media literacies that will make online media users all more responsible in a just and more equitable virtual world.
